Newark Community Health Centers, Inc. and the New Jersey Primary Care Association presents Congressman Payne with the “2006 Community Health Defender Award”

East Orange, NJ - In recognition of his work in Congress to provide quality health care to those who are medically uninsured and underserved, the National Association of Community Health Centers has named Congressman Donald M. Payne as a “2006 Community Health Defender Award” recipient.  Katherine Grant –Davis, Executive Director of The New Jersey Primary Care Association (NJPCA),   a non-profit corporation that represents the organizational providers and affiliates of community-based ambulatory health care centers statewide and Peter R. Velez, President/CEO of Newark Community Health Centers, Inc. (NCHC),  a network of federally qualified health centers that provides comprehensive primary care services  to children and adults in Newark, East Orange, Orange and Irvington presented the award to  Congressman Payne at a ceremony today at East Orange Primary Care Center, one of the NCHC Health Center sites. The Community Health Defender Award is presented annually to select Members of Congress who have worked successfully to increase the number of community, migrant, public housing and homeless health centers that provide quality health care to medically uninsured and underserved people.   “We are the safety net for many people in Newark, East Orange, Irvington and the surrounding cities” said Peter R. Velez, President and Chief Executive Officer of Newark Community Health Centers, Inc.  “I am honored to present the 2006 Community Health Defender Award to Congressman Payne who understands the important role health centers play in delivering quality affordable health care to the community.”
